What it is

In my online course, Get Food Smart, Get Real, I explain a concept I named, ‘The Swing’.  In short, it’s when a person is easily influenced by what they hear, watch or read.  For example, they might be listening to a podcast and hear someone (doctor, influencer, or average person) talk about how they ‘healed’ themselves from a chronic condition or how they lost a bunch of weight in a short period of time.  This person discusses their eating choices (keto, paleo, vegan etc.) and supplements that have helped them. The person listening starts to adopt these same recommendations thinking it will help them too.  In reality, they don’t fully appreciate all the intricacies truly involved.  They don’t fully appreciate all the trial and error the person went through to heal themselves. Or if the weight loss they achieved was sustainable.

What Happens When you Swing

Their take-away might be to remove gluten, or choose plant-based over animal products.  Meanwhile, there is no real understanding of how to choose clean gluten-free or plant-based options.  In some cases, choosing products with these labels can do more harm than good. That’s because the items are usually filled with sugary, over processed junk ingredients.  

We’re all very different and there rarely is a one size fits all approach.  So, inevitably a few months pass and they’re not achieving the same success and they hear, watch or read another account of what worked for someone else. The person listening is usually desperate for knowledge due to their health / weight issues. So they decide to go 180 degrees the other way and follow these new recommended habits.  And that, is The Swing.  

I have noticed that the swing can occur up to 4 times in one year.  I might be talking to someone that is Paleo and then several months pass and they are now Vegan.  Then I ask them how that happened, and they say, I watched…, or I read…, or I heard…

How to Combat the Swing

My response is always the same, and it goes something like this:  If you truly understood the What are you Buying pyramid, and truly understood that Clean Eating isn’t about deprivation then you would never swing.  You would never be influenced by a movie, podcast, or blog…EVER, because your core knowledge is solid! 

This ‘swinging’ is what is preventing people from achieving lasting longevity.  Most people swing because they don’t have a solid foundation in their knowledge for clean eating.  They have bought into ‘picking a lane rather than understanding how the food got to their plate. 

How about you?
