How many times in your lifespan have you heard these two words – They said …?
The average person hears between 20,000 – 30, 000 words per day and about 55% of their time is devoted to listening. So, in your lifespan, you’ve heard random anecdotes that started with ‘they said’ A LOT! Many of these statements relate to everything from health and wellness to how to live your life.
Common “They Said” PHRASES
I’ve listed a few that I think are so common that most people don’t ever question their validity or the original source. They just hear and then repeat these types of statements (and others) without using any sort of discernment. Let’s review some popular ‘they said’ statements?
- Eat 6 small meals a day.
- Exercise 3x / week.
- Drink 8 glasses of water each day.
- Eat 5 fruits and vegetables / day.
- Wear sunscreen.
My question is, who is ‘they’? Who is this all mighty and powerful “they’ crowd that seems to have so much power over our thoughts and minds? There are so many of these statements that we’ve all heard throughout the years and that a great majority of the population believe, and worse repeat without any hesitation.
Today’s world of social media is filled with bloggers, influencers, and podcasters; typically sharing stories and interviewing people. This is part of the ‘they said’ crowd. Prior to social media, it was the traditional media espousing what is ‘good’ for us. Everything from what to eat to what to buy.
There are so many opinions on everything that it’s hard for us to parse truth from fiction, or fact versus opinion. So what do we do? Here are the tips I follow:
- I hear people’s opinion(s) but it doesn’t mean I listen.
- I see everyone as a data point. Then I use my judgement/intuition when making decisions.
- I know there isn’t a one-size fits all when it comes to diet/exercise/wellness etc. so I am open to the message and messenger but slow to jump onto any bandwagon because no one knows what makes me ME!
We are all unique beautiful souls trying to do the best we can. So the next time you hear, ‘they said’ think twice, question the source, and use those all important critical thinking skills to make decisions that are best for YOU.
