Did you know that most people look at food that is labeled organic, pasture-raised, or regenerative as different? And this is required eating for people that must eat ‘this way’? Many people will come into my store and say, I’ll let my (husband/wife/etc.) know about your store. They eat ‘this kind of food’. Huh?
What does THAT mean?
So, does that mean they’re not believing that eating ‘real food’ matters? Or does it mean they’re thinking the industrial and/or processed food that they’re eating is real? Honestly, I don’t know. Maybe most people think the industrial food system is ‘real food’… I just don’t know. So instead of conjecturing, I’ll tell you what I do know.
- The whole food (produce, meat, seafood) that is sold in supermarkets around the country is not as nutritionally dense as the whole food that was available prior to the ‘70’s.
- There is more processed food (preservatives and chemicals) today than at any other time in history.
- Baby Boomers had the ‘privilege’ of eating ‘real food’ for at least the first 30 years of their lives. And every generation after that has increased their processed food consumption.
- Children under 15 are eating less nutritionally dense food, and more processed food. Not even close to what their grand-parents were fed!
Did you know that when McDonald’s first opened, their French Fries had minimal ingredients that included potatoes, tallow, and salt? I encourage you to look up the current ingredients.
So what exactly is ‘this kind of food’
So, let’s review the statement ‘this kind of food’:
- It’s looking at the welfare of the animal, the food they’ are fed, how they live, and how they are harvested.
- It’s understanding ingredients that cause or contribute to inflammation.
- It’s about intention.
What’s important to you and your family? What are the priorities you want to set as a family? If health is a priority, then I encourage you to adjust your mindset. Clean eating isn’t about deprivation, or that it’s more expensive! It is understanding where the foods come from and if that food is going to help you or hurt you…that’s it!
You don’t have to follow any lifestyle eating plan like carnivore, plant-based, vegan, paleo, keto, vegetarian etc. Simply understand what you’re buying and how that food got to your plate. You control fork-to-mouth and you control your purse strings.
The next time you’re at the grocery store, look at the ingredients FIRST, don’t look at the Nutritional Facts or the marketing. Just look at the ingredients so when you do review the Nutritional Facts everything will make sense for you.
